Dr. Sian Proctor is a geoscientist, explorer, space artist, and astronaut. She is the mission pilot for the Inspiration4 all-civilian orbital mission to space. She is also one of The Explorer’s Club 50: Fifty People Changing the World. Her motto is called Space2inspire where she encourages people to use their unique, one-of-a-kind strengths, and passion to inspire those within their reach and beyond. She believes that we need to actively strive for a J.E.D.I. space: a just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive space as we advance human spaceflight.

Sian is the first Black woman to pilot a space flight and she along with the three other crew members were part of the pioneering mission. Sian was born in Guam but raised in Fairport and is an entrepreneur, educator, trained pilot and active voice in the space exploration community.

The Learning Leader Show

  • Artist: I became an artist in the summer of 2020 and that won me the prosperity seat on Inspiration4. As a result, I was able to paint in space! Becoming an artist wasn’t easy. I spent my entire career as a geoscience teacher and, as a result of covid, needed a creative outlet so I became a postcard Afrofuturism artist. I won my seat by creating an original poem called Space2inspire that I shared on Twitter.
  • The last call Sian made before she went to space? Michelle Obama. Mrs. Obama said, “You are making history. I want to thank you for your courage, curiosity, and your bravery.” “You are representing what it means to be America.”
  • You get a call from space every day. She spent 3 days in space. Bono was one of them while in space. Don’t be afraid to ask.
  • Space life and post-space life… Changes your life. Transformative experience. Especially not as a career astronaut. “You splash down and then you go home.”
