SAY NO TO THE STATUS QUO.

IT’S TIME FOR EXCELLENCE.

The world’s most effective leaders have always found a way to adapt and thrive in times of uncertainty. In this moment, will you rise up or will you maintain status quo and not progress?

Pursuing excellence requires a mindset that is biased towards action. It is the pursuit of getting better. It’s not about what you acquire. It’s about who you become in the process of acquiring it.

I’ve interviewed hundreds of the most productive achievers in the world on my podcast, The Learning Leader Show, to discover the most useful ideas for pursuing and sustaining excellence. I’ve found a pattern of uncommon behaviors that set these stellar individuals apart. In this book, I share their stories so that you can implement the best of what others have learned.

YOU’LL LEARN…

  • Why the world’s greatest marathoner sees running solo as a team sport
  • Why the age-old advice of “finding your passion” is misguided – and what to do instead

  • How a Navy SEAL overcame an injury by dispelling the belief that “life should be fair”

…and MUCH more!

WITH THIS BOOK IN HAND, YOU’LL…

  • Commit to yourself and the process of building purpose, focus, and discipline every day
  • Develop resilience to face new challenges—and find inspiration for the long haul
  • Seek guidance—and lead others to new heights
  • Meet the moment—and attack every opportunity with purpose

  • Create a trusted group of advisors—and become a lifelong learner

Packed with specific actions to take, experiments to run, and tools to analyze what works best for you, this uncompromisingly practical guide will inspire, challenge, support, and empower you to become your very best.

NOT SURE

IF THE PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE IS FOR YOU?

To live an excellent life, we must continually and deliberately examine what we’re doing. Are our actions making us better? Are we living the life we want to live?

With this book, my goal is to be both practical and aspirational: dig into what excellence is, why it matters, and how to go about pursuing it. The focus is on growth-oriented, hard-working, rigorously thinking people. It’s not a book for everyone.

THE PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE ISN’T FOR EVERYONE.

THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR YOU IF:

  • You’re content with the status quo, phoning it in at work, and living for the weekends

  • You’re not interested in growing in your personal or professional life
  • You don’t care about excellence – you don’t see why it matters

THIS BOOK IS GREAT FOR ANYONE WHO:

  • Wants to explore why success doesn’t equal excellence – and why excellence matters much more

  • Wants to become the best version of themselves
  • Is intent on avoiding negative outcomes like burn out or physical deterioration

“Ryan Hawk has led teams on the football field, in the boardroom, and working with senior leaders of corporate America. He’s learned how to build trust, take action, and get results. If you want to do the same, then read this book!”

Joel Peterson, chairman of JetBlue Airways and best-selling author of The 10 Laws of Trust

The Pursuit of Excellence is not just interesting, or inspiring, it will literally change your life. Filled with fascinating examples and practical advice for how to approach your career differently, this book is a must read. I highly recommend it.”

Erin Meyer, professor INSEAD Business School in Paris and best-selling author of No Rules Rules: Netflix & The Culture of Reinvention

“This is an outstanding read on all that goes into excellence. Ryan delivers real, practical and profound insights into the pursuit of a standard of excellence in our lives and work. The anecdotes are fascinating and speak to the years of his detailed study of high achieving people, as well as his own pursuit of this standard.”

Chris Holtmann, Head Coach, Ohio State University Men’s Basketball Team

“This book is FIRE. I’m going to buy one for all of my new hires.”

Bert Bean, CEO of Insight Global

HI, I’M RYAN HAWK.

When I was growing up, I was committed to excellence in sports. I spent much of my life on the field. But when the promise of a future in sports went away, I began to explore excellence in other areas of life.

In my first job in sales, I worked hard to get better at it. I interviewed the top performers in my division, implemented their advice, and worked to become one of the most productive sales professionals at my company. I was pursuing excellence. The result was not only high performance in my career, but a lifelong curiosity in excellence: what it is and how to cultivate it.

The Pursuit of Excellence, my latest book, is the culmination of my obsession with excellence. To complete it, I’ve drawn from conversations with 450+ of the world’s most productive achievers as well as my own personal experience. You’ll find useful stories within these pages, many of which have never been shared before.

In addition to writing, I’m also the host of The Learning Leader Show, a podcast that has been listened to by millions of people in more than 150 countries. I am regularly asked to speak on leadership and personal and professional development for large company events. I am proud to speak for and consult with some of the world’s leading brands:

It is my mission to help you value and pursue excellence. Happy reading!
