So a few years ago, I researched what seemed to be the natural next step for my growth, which was earning a PhD in leadership.

However, when I started looking at the curriculum of the programs that were out there, it looked like there was probably only about 30 to 40% of it that I would enjoy, and about 60% or more that I would not.

And so I thought, “Is there a way that I could pick my own topics, choose my own professors, and learn from the people who I admire the most?”

I chose to create my own PhD in leadership. And that’s how I began The Learning Leader Show.

Ever since then, I’ve been reaching out and speaking with some of the most inspiring, intelligent, creative leaders on the planet, recording them, and sharing the conversation with the world. I've spoken with a number of my heroes. I’ve talked with the people who fascinate me: best selling authors, CEOs of big companies, solo entrepreneurs, world-class athletes, coaches, and many more.

I've learned more in the past four years doing this than anything I've ever done in my life.

I’ve made so many discoveries. Everyone who I’ve talked to has unique insights on leadership. If you’re on this page, you probably know me from the podcast. You’ve probably been listening, growing, and improving right along with me.

So you know that all along the way, the guests on my podcast have shared countless comments, stories, and principles that are like gold nuggets.

However, these gold nuggets from the podcast are scattered through hundreds of episodes which represent countless hours of listening.

Even for my diehard listeners who have heard every episode (thank you very much, by the way), it’s like panning for gold. As valuable as the podcast is, it’s hard to remember everything everyone said. It’s hard to assimilate all the takeaways when it’s in that format.

And I’ve always wanted to make this more accessible, kind of like handing out gold bricks instead of handing out mining equipment.

For the past two years, I’ve had the growing desire to compile and curate all of the most useful lessons I’ve learned. I’ve wanted to pack them into an easy-to-learn format that extracts all the best lessons and imparts them in a clear and actionable way.

I’ve been learning all this time from the top minds in leadership. Now, I feel the responsibility to make it easier for others to learn the same.

So I’m taking action.

I’ve packaged up the most impactful and useful knowledge into an online course that I’m now incredibly excited and privileged to be launching for the first time.  

It’s called The Learning Leader Academy, and it is a 6-week program that will teach excellence in leadership through a mixture of instruction, interaction, and implementation.

You’re going to have a hand in forming the material for future students who enroll in this course. When we go through it this first time, it’s going to be a more hands-on experience than we’ll ever have again.

That’s because I want to be able to pivot, tweak, and customize things in the course before launching it on a large scale to a broader audience. I’ll be asking for your input on what is working for you and what is not. We are going to have a much more intimate structure than what I’ll eventually roll out.

I have three goals for you:

  • You’ll be educated. You’ll get a “mini PhD” from all the learnings that I designed for myself in the “PhD program” that I created on the Learning Leader show. 
  • You’ll be empowered. I’ll be sharing compelling stories and making your road to leadership smoother and easier. 
  • You’ll be inspired to act, to make a change. Head knowledge is only a fraction of the picture when it comes to leadership. The biggest and most important part is the execution. So in the course, you’ll be taking action, building habits, and doing.

Questions you may have about The Learning Leader Academy

Learning leadership excellence is a mix of two things.

1) Sharing the stories and science of others who have paved the way before us. I experienced growth when Simon Sinek told me, "if you have a desire to see others succeed, THAT'S why you lead." Another example was Kat Cole's model that great leaders have this mixture of four things: courage and confidence mixed with curiosity and humility. There are concepts I'll be sharing that you'll grasp as soon as you hear them, and they'll make a permanent difference in how you see the world, approach leadership, and execute.

2) The other (bigger) half is execution. We will be concentrating on the specific actions you need to take, habits you need to implement, and skills you need to learn, so that you can actually practice leadership and make strides forward. This is the tougher part, the part where people are tempted to get weary and quit. But that brings us to another subset of execution, which is the ability to handle adversity with grit and resilience. We'll be covering the mindset you need to have as a leader, and what you can do about that.

Obviously, the practice side of the equation is the part that you won't be done with in 6 weeks. In fact, you'll never be done.

But you will be in the right trajectory. You'll be practicing the right things. You'll know what to focus on and how to move forward so that you accelerate your growth.

You should. That is a great supplement to this course. You can have every detail and nuance that way, and the more you expose yourself to the mentality and thought processes of great leaders, the more you will absorb that.

This course is for you if you know that leadership is a choice and you have chosen to be a leader. You are already performing at a relatively high level. You are seeking knowledge, guidance, and community. You know that others can help them grow and get better and better, and you realize that the pursuit of excellence in leadership never really ends.

It doesn't matter if you have not gotten promoted to a management role yet. You might not yet have people reporting to you. That's ok. You can still choose to lead even if you haven't been promoted yet, and you'll still be a great fit for the course, because you possess that growth mindset.

However, this course is NOT for you (and you should NOT enroll) if you think that you're not yet a leader because "you haven't been picked." Leadership is a choice, and if you are not a leader, that's because you haven't chosen to be. So that's your fault, and this course will not help you, because only you can make that choice for yourself.

What's Inside The Learning Leader Academy

Here’s a quick run-through of what you’ll learn in each module:

In week 1, we’ll cover the foundational elements of effective leadership. It starts with your personal operating framework. I’ll share what I’ve learned and how you can create this for yourself to operate at a high level. I’ll also share the proper definition of effective leadership and the difference between managing and leading.

In week 2, you’ll cultivate your personal excellence—so that you can move from knowledge to action and implementation. I’ll push you to expand your intellectual curiosity, self-discipline, and habits of effective leadership. We’ll talk about qualities of personal excellence that every leader needs to cultivate, and how to implement all that while still enjoying a great work-life balance, daily motivation, and emotional health.

In week 3, we’ll explore how you can earn respect as a leader. The best leaders are great listeners, are authentic, and encourage curiosity. I’ll share what I’ve learned from interviewing hundreds of the world’s most inspiring leaders so that you can lead with confidence and earn true respect.

In week 4, you’ll learn how leaders communicate. The most excellent communicators in the world share common traits, and I’m going to teach you what they are. We’ll talk about how to balance firmness with empathy, as well as how to tackle difficult or high-stakes conversations.

In week 5, you’ll get effective strategies for taking on a new role. Yes, it can be scary and bring growing pains to play at a higher level. This is your chance to be trained in advance to take on a leadership role for the first time, step into a more prominent role after being a leader for a while, and be the best version of yourself in brand new challenges.

In week 6, I’m going to open up candidly about dealing with failure, plus cover YOUR topics. Failure becomes harder the bigger you are. Learn my tips for how to handle adversity and come out better than you went in. Plus, get the opportunity to raise your question or ask about any topic of leadership that’s relevant to you.

How the Learning Leader Academy works

We’re going to have a great time together.

We’ll meet once a week for 6 weeks, and I plan to run each class for 75 minutes.

Each class will follow a general structure:

  • Review and recap the previous week, and answer any questions that arose
  • Deliver my live presentation
  • Questions and discussion time

If you miss a live session, don’t worry; I’ll be sharing the recordings afterward so that you don’t miss a single thing.

Inside the Learning Leader Academy, the content is excellent, but what’s going to be even better is the community.
